Amazing Arthritis Natural Medicine – Gin-soaked Raisins (Arthritis) Recipe
1 lb golden raisins
Gin (approximately 1 pint)
Glass bowl (Pyrex is good — crystal is bad)
Glass jar with lid
Spread the golden raisins evenly on the bottom of the glass bowl and pour enough gin over the raisins to completely cover them. Let them stay that way until all the gin is absorbed by the raisins. It takes about 5-7 days, depending on the humidity in your area. (You may want to lightly cover the bowl with a paper towel so that dust or insects don’t drop in.) To make sure that all of the raisins get their fair share of the gin, occasionally take a spoon and stir the mixture, bringing the bottom layer of raisins to the top of the bowl.
As soon as all the gin has been absorbed, transfer the raisins to the jar, put the lid on and keep it closed. Do not refrigerate. Each day, eat 9 raisins — exactly and only 9 raisins a day. Most people eat them in the morning with breakfast.
A Note from the Wilen sisters: Be sure to check with your health professional to make sure that gin-soaked raisins will not conflict with medication you may be taking, or present a problem for any health challenge you may have, particularly an iron-overload condition. And do not give the raisins to children or women who are pregnant or nursing.1
Questions & Answers: Amazing Arthritis Natural Medicine — Gin Raisins Arthritis
Q: Should I cover the raisins while the gin evaporates?
A: A towel (paper or cloth) may keep dust out. An airtight lid would prevent evaporation.
Q: When will the raisins dry out?
A: Never. They will always be a little moist. That’s OK.
Q: Will I get tipsy on the alcohol in 9 raisins?
A: We had the raisins analyzed for alcohol content with a high-tech mass spectrometer. Nine contain less than one drop of alcohol.
Q: Why 9 raisins and not 10 or 20?
A: Why indeed? Home remedies are not science. Goodness knows how the originator of this recipe came up with 9, but it seems to work.
Q: Why golden raisins and not black raisins?
A: Some people tell us black raisins also work.
Q: Why gin and not some other alcoholic beverage?
A: Perhaps it’s the juniper berries used in making gin. Juniper was used by American Indians to treat arthritis, and this herb may have anti-inflammatory properties.2
